Getting Ready for Your New Puppy

Is a new puppy going to be joining your household soon? If so, that’s wonderful! We probably don’t have to tell you that you’re in for some adorable moments with your cute new pet. Puppies certainly do have a special way of putting smiles on people’s faces! However, in order to get little Fido started out on the right paw in life, you’ll need to make some preparations. Here, a Mattoon, IL vet discusses getting ready for your new canine pal.

Shopping

You’ll need to do some shopping to get ready for your furry new arrival. Little Fido will need a comfy bed, a collar or harness, a leash, and grooming supplies. You’ll also want to pick up waste baggies, doggy dishes, and plenty of toys, including some suitable chew toys. Food and treats are also a must. Ask your vet and/or breeder for specific nutritional recommendations.

Puppyproofing

Puppies are very curious and frisky. Your adorable little pal will want to explore every nook and cranny of his new home, and figure out what he can and can’t eat or play with. This can get a baby dog into some serious trouble! Remove or secure anything that could choke, poison, or entangle your pet. Some of the things you’ll want to address include toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; wires and cords; household chemicals; automotive products; lawn and garden products; and anything small or sharp.

Yard Check

Before you bring little Fido home, do a thorough check of your yard. Look for toxic plants, and remove any you find by the root. Also, make sure that your fencing is secure. We strongly recommend getting a self-latching gate. While you’re at it, why not get your canine friend a doghouse?

Veterinary Care

Little Fido will need to visit us a few times that first year, for exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. We also recommend that dogs be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Research

Your furry friend will have a lot to learn over the next several months. Do some research on training, housebreaking, and socialization. This will help you form a game plan for helping little Fido grow from an adorable bouncy puppy into an adorable, polite adult dog.
